With so many vast national parks in Costa Rica, endless stretches of coastline, biodiverse rainforests and rugged mountain landscapes, it’s no wonder hiking is one of the most popular activities available in Costa Rica – oh and aside from the occasional park fee, it’s completely free. All you need is a pair of hiking shoes and a good sense of direction (and maybe a guide for more challenging adventures).
One of the most amazing aspects about hiking in Costa Rica is the diversity in trails. Here you’ll find everything from flat and easy interpretive paths to intense multi-day overnight excursions in the raw jungles of Corcovado National Park. On the other hand, hiking to Arenal’s hot springs can be quite relaxing. The various trails around the area’s El Silencio Mirador range in skill level from beginner to advanced, passing through verdant primary forests. On the Caribbean coast, sustainable chocolate farm or vanilla spice plantation tours are also great for slow-paced strolls.
Perhaps the most fun hiking excursions are combo tours. Hiking in Barra Honda combines a challenging hour-long hike with a caving adventure; at Tenorio National Park you can go for a dip in the Rio Celeste – a river characterized by its unbelievable hue of baby blue; in Guanacaste you can hike the foothills of Rincon de la Vieja before ziplining along a gorgeous canopy tour and waterfall rappelling your way back to society.
