Dos Brazos Rio Tigre - La Tarde

Is a tight-knit community nestled next to the superb Corcovado National Park, one of the most important and biodiverse ecosystems in the world. The village runs along two branches of the Rio Tigre river which merges at its center; it is this which gives the town it's name of Dos Brazos de Rio Tigre or "Two Arms of the Tiger River".

The area surrounding Dos Brazos has a rich, although still relatively little known, pre-Columbian indigenous history. The newly opened Sendero El Tigre trail even passes through an ancient indigenous burial ground. It was in the 1970s however, that Dos Brazos first became a focal point in the southern Osa Peninsula, when gold miners seeking their fortunes in the rivers that crisscross the landscape descended into the region. As a result, Dos Brazos's population swelled to over 2,000 people and for a decade it was a rather wild gold mining town. Because of this influx of people, many also unfortunately turned to hunting the wildlife to survive and supplement their income when gold became scarcer. Nowadays, Dos Brazos has a population of 295 people and the wildlife is flourishing alongside village life, where small scale panning for gold continues.
