Lapa Rios is a remote eco-luxury resort set on a 930-acre reserve that was purchased by two former Peace Corps volunteers in 1990. The couple decided to abandon their suburban lives in the United States, sell all their belongings, and finance the protection of the land covered mostly in primary rainforest with enormous ecological value.

The small, upscale wilderness lodge, Lapa Rios, came about three years later as a means to continue financing the project. Today, it is one of the most renowned and successful ecotourism operations in the world. Visitors to the lodge take joy in seeing how "ordinary" people (John was a lawyer and Karen taught music) can make an extraordinary difference in the conservation of wilderness and in the lives of those who live there.

All 16 spacious bungalows are situated along three ridges and open out to the sea. Each one can sleep up to four people in two queen size beds. Fresh rain forest breezes race in through screened wall windows, that let in panoramic views of ocean and jungle. All of the bungalows have an indoor (solar-heated) shower and a private outdoor garden shower, two sinks, large closets and a deck overlooking the rainforest and the ocean. Bungalows are connected by a series of paths and staircases.
