Rugged Terrain
The trails at Rincon de la Vieja are challenging at best, so don’t expect a cake walk. This national park is made up of 35,000 acres; because of its immense size, it is not uncommon for adventurers to hike for long stretches without seeing another soul along the way.
Sendero Encantado plows through lush plains and fields of fragrant wildflowers to a rocky mountainside. Climb up a steep incline to find a crisp waterfall and a link to the Las Pailas trail, which leads to thermal waters and boiling mud pits. From there, you choose to go on to the Hidden Waterfalls or Cangreja Waterfall.
For an extreme challenge, try the eight-hour roundtrip excursion all the way to the precipice of Rincon de la Vieja. The breathtaking panoramic views from the volcano’s summit are well worth the tough trek.
Conical Adventure
All types of organized adventures are available at Rincon de la Vieja. Canopy tours, horseback riding, bird and animal watching can be arranged – the park is home to over 200 species of birds, three types of monkeys and countless varieties of insects and butterflies. Or try tubing down the Rio Negro, where you can navigate its rapids atop your very own inflatable donut. Another wet and wild time entails a forty-five minute horseback ride leading to the Victoria Waterfall, where you can learn the ins and outs of canyoning – also known as waterfall rappelling – down this slick rock face.
Relaxation Violation
After a long day of strenuous hiking and activity, head over to the luxurious spa to rejuvenate those tired muscles. Situated in the middle of the jungle and encircled by the Colorado River, pampering yourself has never been so tempting. The wellness here center offers everything from reflexology to deep tissue massage to chocolate wraps.
Talented massage therapists and estheticians can transform your body and soul with an utterly calming back rub. Or do your own treatment beginning in a natural sauna. Then smear volcanic mud all over your face and body, and let it dry. Wash it off in the shower before soaking in Rincon de la Vieja’s hot geothermal waters.
