Volcanoes and National Parks
There are great national parks, volcanoes and other inland sites to experience within a quick drive from Liberia. To the north you will find the Orosi Volcano within the Guanacaste National Park, as well as the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park. Both are wonderful opportunities to experience the dry rain forest plant life unique to this zone. Active Rincon de la Vieja offers hot springs and mud baths,and local lodges offer many activities including hiking, canyoning, rappelling, zip-line tours, horseback riding, waterfalls, and mountain biking.
Beaches (Playas in Spanish)
Playa Pan de Azucar is remote and ideal for honeymooners. By contrast, the marina and beaches near Playa Flamingo bustle with activity. The famous surf of Playa Grande lies just to the North of Tamarindo Beach. The two beaches are separated by a natural salt water estuary, Estero Tamarindo. South of Tamarindo Bay is a beautiful secluded estuary and beach, Playa Langosta. It along with Playa Grande are part of the Las Baulas National Park surrounding Tamarindo. For excellent surfing head to Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, or Playa Junquillal.
Fishing and Diving
The Papagayo Peninsula and Gulf offers some of the best golf and fishing in Costa Rica. For diving and snorkeling, Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal can't be beat.
