San Juan del Sur is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations in Nicaragua, likely because it's the closest beach town to the Costa Rica border. The city center attracts mostly a younger crowd of backpackers and adventurers that come to soak up its unique social atmosphere. But in the hills you’ll find several upscale resorts that cater to a more refined clientele.
Recently San Juan del Sur erected an enormous statue of Jesus on a hill above the bay, hoping to attract tourism in Rio de Janiero style. It worked. You can drive or hike up a steep trail to enjoy the statue’s gorgeous 360 degree panorama of the town and bay.
On the way back, bookworms should plan a stop to el Gato Negro, the bookstore in central San Juan del Sur. Here you can sip on a freshly brewed coffee while perusing an extensive collection of new and second hand books (mostly in English and Spanish, but a limited selection in other languages is also available).
Fishing Followed by Fine Dining
Sport fishing San Juan del Sur’s rich waters has become increasingly popular. Wahoo, black marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi mahi are commonly caught offshore. Surfing is top notch in this area, particularly at Playa Maderas just 20 minutes to the north – this beach breaks the best at mid to high tide, spitting out fairly large waves and the occasional barrel or two. Playa Yankee, Colorado and Panga Drops are breaks more suitable for advanced surfers.
As for dining the beachside restaurant El Timon serves up some of the most delicious seafood in town; not only that, but it is also a wonderful place to watch a gorgeous pink and orange San Juan del Sur sunset. An additional option can be found just down the street at Hotel La Dolce Vita. Their pizza dough is light, crispy and made in-house with seriously succulent tomato sauce and fresh local ingredients.
Unforgettable Nightlife
Sports fans will never miss a big game in San Juan del Sur thanks to Big Wave Dave’s, which features several television screens. Here, you’ll also find a pool table and dart boards. At night, San Juan del Sur truly comes alive. The Iguana Bar is the most popular place around, as it is open the latest. Its second story features a dance floor with cool breezes and nice views of the ocean.
