Over the past five years, Tamarindo has become the unofficial surfing capital of Costa Rica. This modern beach town is one of the most visited vacation destinations in Costa Rica, admired for consistent surf and a lively atmosphere.

Tamarindo Hotels & Resorts
There are chic hotels with elegant beachside casitas (small houses) all along Tamarindo’s coast, many of them available at surprisingly reasonable rates. There are also a couple of high end luxury hotels with enormous swimming pools, opulent suites and beautiful ocean views. In case you forget something from home, or if shopping is a must for your Costa Rica vacaction, nearby you’ll find modern and boutique clothing stores, an Automercado grocery store with imported foodstuffs and even a MAC make-up store.

Tamarindo beach at sunset
The beaches at sunsetsets in Tamarindo are legendary. From sunrise to sunset surfers take to the beach and perfect waves.

Things to do in Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Most of Playa Tamarindo’s coastline is considered a good jumping off place for beginner surfers, while the neighboring beaches of Playa Grande, Playa Langosta and Playa Avellanas are better suited to the intermediate and advanced. (Playa is Spanish for Beach).

Sunset sailing cruises on luxurious catamarans are very popular here, with tours departing from the Tamarindo Bay a couple of hours before dusk. The tour is affectionately known as a ‘booze cruise’ because of the open bar’s never ending flow of alcohol. Excursions include a light dinner of various appetizers, enjoyed between snorkeling, kayaking or just relaxing on the sundeck.

Between October and March, animal lovers should plan an evening outing to Parque Nacional Las Baulas at Playa Grande (Big Beach) – just north of Tamarindo. Enormous leatherback sea turtles migrate here to swim ashore, dig giant holes in the sand and lay eggs on these very same sands where they themselves were born.

Dining in Tamarindo
You can expect to find a wide variety of culinary options in Tamarindo, including several sushi, Italian and Mediterranean restaurants. This town is overflowing with surf camps and board shops. Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is situated right on the beachfront, and features a killer happy hour every day at their in-house restaurant, Eat At Joe’s.

Tamarindo is also renowned for its incredible sport fishing. These waters are brimming with sailfish, marlin, wahoo, tuna and mahi mahi. Experienced boat captains charter private inshore and offshore sport fishing trips off extravagant yachts. December to February is the absolute best time for anglers to come, but conditions are generally great all year round. Afterward, hit up one of the local spas for a long massage or wellness treatment to cure your tired muscles.
