A Vacation for the Senses in Montezuma, Costa Rica

Montezuma’s colorful streets, organic food and slower pace make it a magnet for free spirited travelers from all over the globe. This more than a Costa Rica Vacation — it's a cultural experience.

The paradigm of a laid back “hippie” town, Montezuma was named after the fifth Aztec emperor. Here in this unique part of the Nicoya Peninsula, pura vida (the pure life) reigns supreme.

Downtown Shopping & Dining
The downtown area is truly a sensory experience: streets are lined with neon-colored buildings, birds chirp at passersby; and delicious scents waft out of local coffee shops and mellow bakeries. Unique clothing and jewelry stores are everywhere, and bohemians sell handmade wares from tables on the sidewalk.

Wildlife, Trails & Guided Tours?Wildlife is everywhere, with coatimundis and whiteface monkeys meandering about the treetops. The horseback riding trail to El Chorro Waterfall – one of the few freshwater falls on earth that empties directly into an ocean –  is gorgeous, winding some of Costa Rica’s most stunning terrain.

For an inexpensive self-guided excursion, try hiking some of the local trails. First swing by Café Buen Provecho to pick up a scrumptious picnic lunch – you can’t help but make friends with young and amicable owners Rob and Melissa while you wait. Then hike the 15-minute trail to Montezuma Waterfall, where you can eat lunch on the river bank and go for a dip in one of the crisp freshwater pools.

Montezuma is home to the Mariposario, an enormous butterfly garden run by three adventurous brothers. Here you can learn about the many species of insects in Costa Rica, and also how to better preserve them for future generations.

Nearby Attractions
Just a short car ride from Montezuma you’ll find Cabuya, a sleepy beach community made up of gravel roads, tranquil bays and pristine jungles. The small town features a mysterious island cemetery that you can explore by foot via a long sandbar that appears at low tide. The graveyard was originally a burial ground for Native American Indians from Pre-Columbian times, but now serves to intrigue visitors brave enough to set foot upon it.
